TreasureDAO, the community behind Arbitrum's largest ecosystem of games, is considering its biggest decision yet.
This week, Treasure's core contributors put forward a proposal to migrate the Treasure Layer 2 (L2) testnet from Arbitrum Orbit tech to ZKsync's Elastic Chain infra.
So, what's on the table? Treasure's builders merged proposals from Matter Labs and the ZKsync Foundation into TIP-44, which recommends using ZKsync to launch the mainnet version of the Treasure L2.
Reasons cited included adopting the zero-knowledge rollup format, ZKsync's native support for account abstraction, and the ability to readily tap into the wider Elastic Chain ecosystem. The proposal also called for a token swap between TreasureDAO and the ZKsync Foundation—16.8 million ZK tokens for 5.26 million MAGIC tokens.
All that said, for Treasure's core builders to have submitted TIP-44 means they clearly believe this change of scenery would better serve their long-term goals around scalability and UX.
For now, we'll have to see what happens next. Voting is poised to begin for MAGIC holders on September 17th, and with Treasure's core contributors not participating in the vote, it'll be up to the community to decide whether the leap to ZKsync is worth it.
If it comes through, the migration would certainly be a blow to Arbitrum's gaming scene. Alongside Pirate Nation, Treasure has been Arbitrum's most teeming gaming project to date.
Yet with Arbitrum's huge new gaming fund and the recent introduction of Stylus, which allows Arbitrum games to be created in popular programming languages like Rust and C, don't count the biggest L2 out when it comes to the future of onchain gaming. That future might just be without Treasure moving forward!
