MetaMask, the leading self-custodial crypto wallet, rolled out a new "Social login" feature Tuesday that allows users to create and manage wallets using their existing Google or Apple accounts.

What’s the Scoop?

  • Simplified Onboarding: Instead of managing a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) up front, users can now sign in with a social account and create a password. MetaMask generates the SRP in the background and ties it to the account credentials.
  • Still Self-Custodial: MetaMask emphasized that it cannot access user wallets or passwords. Recovery is only possible through the user’s social login and password.
  • Security Note: If users lose their password and access to their login provider, the wallet cannot be recovered.
