How to Start a Community on Base
Base's app scene is more mature than ever and it's easier than ever to get started. There are now many great resources that you can use to start and manage your own community on the network.
If you have some ideas but aren’t sure where to begin, no worries—let’s walk through a potential blueprint you could follow to dive right into community building.
Setting Up HQ
If you’re starting a community on Base, you’ll want to set up a base command (pun intended) where you can start organizing funds and voting on different actions to take as a group.
An excellent starting point to consider here is Party, a protocol and platform for streamlined onchain group coordination. Whether you’re crowdfunding ETH to invest collectively or looking to launch a community coin, Party’s slick app makes it easy to squad up.
But what if your needs are more expansive and organizational? Then another potential starting point is Tally, which bills itself as the “complete DAO Operating System” for launching custom online collectives.
Establishing Official Channels
Once you have some sort of governance structure prepared, you’ll want to start establishing official comms channels to make it easier for your community to stay updated and to engage with your project.
For longer announcements, consider creating a blog on web3 publishing platform Mirror, which lets you mint your posts as NFTs on Base for your biggest fans to collect. You could also create an exclusive member-only newsletter on Paragraph, another web3 publishing platform that supports Base token-gating.
Speaking of token-gating, if you want to set up a Discord for your community, both Collab.Land and Guild allow you to gate a server using Base assets.
Of course, a crypto-native social media presence would be smart too, and for that I’d start on the top Farcaster client, Warpcast. The app isn’t directly on Base, but its interactive Base-friendly Frames offer many interactive community activation possibilities.
Plus, if you use Warpcast, then you could readily tap into Rounds to incentivize quality engagement in your community channel via routine rewards distributions for the best comments. Similarly, you could use the onchain contests platform JokeRace to engage, poll, and reward your members.
Creating Cred and Bread
Among the best ways to boost your community’s cultural legacy and financial treasury simultaneously is NFT drops.
These releases can come in all different shapes and sizes, so I’d start with excellent creator suite platforms like Zora and Highlight that can support a variety of DIY approaches on Base.
Plus, Zora offers Protocol Rewards, so you can still earn by charging nothing for your mints, and Highlight offers sponsored mints, so you can cover the first X amount of minters for better accessibility. You could even deploy a boosted mint via Boost to bring in more eyes.
Another interesting option here is Hypersub, a Base NFT subscription service you could use to bring in some steady income to the community in exchange for releasing exclusive content to subscribers.
Managing Assets
As your community grows, so may the assets that you collectively manage.
Creating a multisig Safe vault on Base with other community leaders could make sense for the most valuable holdings, and portfolio platforms like DeBank, Zapper, or Zerion could be used to “publish” these holdings transparently.
Your group may occasionally need to trade tokens on Uniswap, or sweep NFTs on Sudoswap, or bridge to another chain using a service like Across, Relay, or Jumper. If you need to analyze any transactions accordingly, Once Upon is a slick Base-friendly block explorer.
Zooming Out
The Base ecosystem is rapidly evolving and now offers fertile ground for innovative community-building efforts. With a myriad of tools at your disposal—from coordination platforms like Party and Tally to communication hubs such as Mirror and Warpcast—the possibilities for organizing and growing your community are expansive. By leveraging these resources, you can create a vibrant, engaging, and well-managed community that thrives on the strengths of the Base network while also meaningfully contributing to it!
