Getting Started with Fuel L2 NFTs

Fuel, one of Ethereum's most experimental L2s to date, is now live and ready to explore.

⛽ Fuel is a new Ethereum Layer 2 unlike any L2 we’ve seen before—don’t sleep on its NFT scene!

  • Fuel is an L2 project I’ve been following for four years. I remember donating to its Gitcoin page in 2020. Fast forward to today, and its evolved form, Fuel Ignition, has just launched its mainnet.
  • What makes Fuel special, then? While Ethereum and all other contemporary L2s use account-based models, Fuel’s FuelVM architecture relies on an unspent transaction output (UTXO) approach. It also appears to be the first “Stage 2” optimistic rollup.
  • Zooming in, this UTXO style allows Fuel to process transactions in parallel, making the L2 very efficient for handling high volumes without congestion bottlenecks.
  • Bottom line? L2s don’t have to be equivalent with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). There is tons of room for experimentation here. Accordingly, the FuelVM is a new advance that has pushed the boundaries of what’s possible atop Ethereum.
  • Of course, another reason to be paying attention to Fuel is a potential token airdrop, as most L2s eventually do. Suggesting this possibility is the Fuel Points program, which just entered Phase 2 with the mainnet launch.
  • Fuel Points can be earned in various ways, like paying for transactions (Gas Points), deploying funds (Passive Points), and being an early user of Fuel Ignition (Loyalty Multiplier).
  • As such, exploring the Fuel NFT scene now is doubly interesting: 1) Fuel will likely rise in importance in the Ethereum ecosystem, 2) and you may eventually be rewarded for your adventuring here with a Fuel token airdrop.
  • So what’s there to do around Fuel NFTs today? First—with a wallet like Fuelet, MetaMask, or Phantom—bridge into the L2 via the current main avenue, the canonical Fuel bridge. Later, fast third-party bridges like Layerswap or Orbiter Finance will add support. Then, some initial options to consider…
  • ⚡️ Thunder — This is one of the first NFT marketplaces on the Fuel mainnet. Drops for collectors are coming soon, meanwhile creators can currently sign up for the project’s Creator Program.
  • 🚀 Props Octane — This is a launchpad platform that makes it easy to create editions or collections of NFTs on Fuel. The site also lets you curate your Fuel mints into galleries, which is a nice touch.
  • ⚔️ Executoors — This is one of the first NFT collections on Fuel, and it’s a fun silly riff on execution environments. When I last checked, there were still +4,000 left to collect, so it’s a potential avenue to rack up your first mint on the L2.

All that said, as more projects come online on Fuel, you can check the Fuel Ecosystem hub to stay updated and find more apps to try!
