The Ethereum Foundation (EF) and Immunefi have announced the launch of the first-ever Ethereum protocol Attackathon, a large-scale crowdsourced security audit competition.

What's the scoop?

  • The Attackathon, hosted by Immunefi, will run for four weeks, focusing on identifying vulnerabilities in the Ethereum protocol.
  • The Ethereum Foundation has seeded the reward pool with $500,000 and aims to raise over $2 million by the end of the sponsorship program on August 1, 2024.
  • Participants will receive education on the protocol’s code through live technical walkthroughs and content from the Attackathon Academy before actively searching for vulnerabilities. Immunefi, known for its extensive web3 security community, will manage the event, ensuring a structured and educational environment for participants.
  • Following the Attackathon, Immunefi will compile the findings into an official report, highlighting discovered vulnerabilities and recognizing top researchers.

Bankless take:

At this point, Ethereum is nearly 10 years old. However, in crypto, a project is never too old to double down on security. By engaging the community and leveraging the expertise of top security researchers, this Attackathon event aims to fortify Ethereum against potential threats for years to come. Additionally, the success of the Attackathon could set a precedent for future security challenges, encouraging further continuous improvement and vigilance within the Ethereum community. We love to see it.
