Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Senator Jim Banks (R-IN) want Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick to immediately suspend export licenses for advanced technology manufacturers to certain Asian destinations.

What's the Scoop?

  • Suspend All Exports: Senators Warren and Banks have requested that the Department of Commerce implement a complete export freeze on all NVIDIA chips and servers destined for Chinese "intermediaries" in Southeast Asia (including Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore) until better controls are in place to ensure China cannot access American-developed AI chips.
  • Super Micro Crisis: The letter comes amid strong proof that that China is fraudulently obtaining chips. Last week, three SMCI affiliates (including its co-founder and number three shareholder) were indicted by the U.S. government for allegedly violating export controls by illegally diverting billions worth of AI server equipment to China.
  • Harshing the Vibe: Just yesterday, Senator Warren made headlines for an unrelated letter. The Wall Street Journal reports that Warren sent a 12-page essay to YouTuber Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson, requesting further details about his company’s recently announced expansion into financial services.
