3 New Crypto Games You Should Play
Short-term price action in crypto has some people feeling bearish, but zoom into the crypto gaming scene, and you'll find a lot to be bullish about right now.
For example:
- Pirate Nation is surging
- Parallel is moving into esports
- Influence just launched on Starknet
- Axie Infinity’s team is making a zkEVM
- Immutable is signing tons of new games
- Fren Pet is doing ~2% of Base transactions
These advances are just the tip of the crypto gaming iceberg, as many newer projects are also currently revving up.
In today’s post, let's dive into three new crypto games that have recently caught my attention and that you may want to try playing in the weeks ahead!
1) Kamigotchi
Kamigotchi, developed by Asphodel Studios, is a fully onchain RPG where players explore a 2D world to collect and battle cute creatures called Kamis, each with their own unique attributes.
Asphodel just launched Kamigotchi’s beta on the game’s bespoke Yominet testnet, a Caldera rollup. To begin playing, you can find the chain details and obtain testnet faucet ETH at yominet.hub.caldera.xyz.
The game's progression revolves around completing challenges and using MUSU, the in-game currency, to purchase items and unlock new areas. You can also mint new Kamis after earning Gacha Tickets.
You navigate the world by spending stamina to move across grid tiles, starting at the map's top, and then you battle and harvest resources along the way. Shops in the game provide essential items, e.g. for reviving Kamis, and later the shopkeepers will offer additional quests.
Of course, the fully onchain gaming scene is still early on in its lifespan, but experiments like Kamigotchi are a fun taste of what’s to come here. It’s worth a try accordingly!
2) OpenSeason
OpenSeason, developed by Fractional Uprising Studios, is a Fortnite-style battle royale game live on the Epic Games Store that maintains its game currencies on Arbitrum.
Set on JPEG Island, players compete in biomes like the Apes’ Swamp and Milady Village, collecting weapons and loot while battling to be the last hero standing. It offers allowlisted NFT collections as in-game avatars, with CryptoPunks, Bored Apes, Miladys, Remilios, and Kanpai Pandas being early options.
OpenSeason also features a progression system, where completing quests and challenges unlocks new areas and items. Additionally, the in-game currency, Beans, can be used for various upgrades or converted into crypto.
Currently, the game’s alpha is only playable by holders of Fractional Uprising’s membership NFTs, but after the beta free game passes will be available to everyone.
All that said, if you’re a fan of battle royales or first-person shooters and wouldn’t mind earning weekly rewards for playing well with iconic NFTs, then OpenSeason should be right up your alley.
3) The Forgotten Runiverse
Forgotten Runiverse, developed by Bisonic, is a free-to-play MMORPG that is part of the expansive Forgotten Runes Wizard's Cult NFT franchise. The game recently announced it was migrating to Ronin, and beta testing will begin later this month.
Notably, the Runiverse game world is planned to cover around 200 square kilometers with 36 distinct regions, making it among the largest virtual world efforts in the cryptoeconomy to date.
Players will be able to own land, collect resources, craft items, and engage in both player vs. player (PvP) and player vs. environment (PvE) battles. The game will also encourage community participation through guilds, monthly PvP leagues, and collaborative lore creation.
All in all, I think Forgotten Runes is one of the most impressive communities in NFTs, and Ronin is one of the most impressive teams in crypto gaming, so to see them link up in bringing the Runiverse to life is something I’m excited to track. Keep this one on your radar.
